Culturally Responsive Care in Behavioral Health
Hybrid (Self-paced e-learning modules + 2 Synchronous Case-Study Workshops)
Program Overview
This course provides clinicians and behavioral health staff with the tools to adapt diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for diverse cultural populations. It moves beyond traditional "one-size-fits-all" mental health models to embrace "idioms of distress" and community-based healing. The program focuses on bridging the gap between Western clinical standards and the unique cultural conceptualizations of health held by patients.
Module 1: Cultural Conceptualizations of Mental Health Topics: Defining "Idioms of Distress"; Distinguishing between culture-bound syndromes and clinical diagnoses; The role of family and collectivist values in recovery.
Module 2: Trauma-Informed Cultural Assessment Topics: Adapting screening tools for diverse populations; Recognizing the impact of historical and intergenerational trauma; Culturally sensitive intake questioning.
Module 3: Adapting Therapeutic Modalities Topics: Cultural adaptations for Evidence-Based Practices (e.g., CBT/DBT); Integrating spiritual/community healing practices into treatment plans; Negotiating clinical goals with family-centered decision-making.
Module 4: Managing Cultural Countertransference Topics: Identifying provider-side bias in behavioral health; Responding to patient-led cultural challenges; Strategies for emotional self-regulation in high-conflict sessions.
